Out here in the hot dry land of southern California, I’ve been thinking alot about Paige“.

I first saw California with her, and she acted as my guide, exhorting me to always ask whether a building was built on bedrock, and to make sure there’s always bottled water to hand. We also spoke of love, and she would recite Yeats:

How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty, with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim’s soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;

There are quite a few things I should have known, or known better. I should have known there was a bowling alley (big! also with arcade games!) in Port Authority. And I should have known that all my winter socks were in a paper bag next to last year’s receipts on the tippy top shelf of my closet.
