Franchises for the New World
Franchises for the New World is a project that began in 2001. I had a few random businesses rolling around in my head, and didn't really know what to do with them. I didn't really want to actually be in business, but I thought maybe someone else might like one of the ideas. I'm sure there are lots of people out there who would love to be a Layer Lady, for example. So I started writing them down. Then I got an invitation to participate at the craft fair that was part of Deitch Project's Christmas party, being thrown by Adam. People think I'm alot craftier than I am. I can make a hat, sort of make a scarf, and if I start with a pair of socks I can make an arm warmer. That's about it. But I thought that maybe I could sell some services, and maybe sell a franchise or two. So I accepted the offer, printed up some materials, including a brochure and various gift certificates, and went to the fair. I didn't sell much, but as a performance I think it went pretty well.
