Prized Possessions is a project consisting of ephemeral nouns spraypainted (in silver) on pieces of driftwood collected on Fischers Island and Martha's Vineyard. I've always loved driftwood as it turned silver, and been particularly drawn not to the branches and hunks of raw wood, but to the planks and shingles that have been returned to nature. A few years ago I fell apart. I was ungrounded, untethered, adrift. I went into exile from New York, and wandered up the coast, imposing my desperate self on friends and family. I was looking for value, and wanted to make the intangible tangible. I began making a list in my head of all the "things" I valued: wonder, faith, flexibility, progress, promise, love, valour, honor, etc. I also began collecting driftwood. When I returned to New York I bought stencils and paint and set up a studio on my fire escape. For a year I lived with the words covering the wall across from my bed. Those words were the first and last things I saw each day. And each day a different one struck me. I tried to live as though those words were the only "things" that mattered. That Christmas/Hannukah I gave each of my friends, family and family friends a word--something that represented what I most wanted for them. For one it was Vim, for another Love, for another Perseverance. Eventually I took the words down--I'd had enough of their loudness, and needed a bit of quiet. I've continued to pass them out and mail them out. I've hung a couple in public spaces, and planted one in a garden. If you see here something that you need, it's yours. If you don't have $20 I'm open to barter. |
